“Be Someone’s Light”
“Life is so amazing and beautiful, and nobody’s happy. BE HAPPY, try! It’ll be worth it.”
“Spread the love”
These are only a few of the quotes that you can find on campus here at Costa Mesa High School. The idea is to post positive posters around school to bring good vibes to students on campus. The mind behind the project is Janelle Alonzo.
Since the beginning of the year, senior Janelle Alonzo has been on a mission to inspire students in a positive manner. She got the idea while attending the annual ASB summer camp. She says, “I was completely inspired to bring something like the hearts project to Mesa, the good vibes.”
There have been a series of projects put out by Janelle and ASB but the biggest one was ‘Spread the Love’. Over 1000 paper hearts filled the senior quad, each heart containing a name of a High School student. The idea was to get people to intermix and talk while everyone looked for their heart.
Understanding the heavy load placed on students, Janelle states, “With trying to juggle all my extra curriculum activities, academics, a job, and everything in between, this year has been extremely rough and overwhelming. I figured I wasn’t the only one feeling this way, so I wanted to be able to bring the small things that I could to campus to help make someone’s day a little brighter.”
Overall the goal is to bring people together, and bring happiness to our campus. Many people have complimented and loved the idea of positive posters. Senior Kamren Hamilton says, “I love that we do this, I feel like it makes people at Mesa feel closer. Plus it makes our campus a little more unique than others.“
Janelle hopes that her legacy with positive posters lives on after she graduates this year. In the long run she hopes that she affects people and influences them to shoot for the stars.
She says, “We, as individual people, can change the world that we live in, but I don’t think people understand that. Changing the world doesn’t mean millions necessarily. It could be one. And if we started realizing that, maybe more young people would put themselves out there for something they’re passionate about.“
Janelle has a few new projects coming up so keep your eyes open to see what message she has next.
*UPDATE: Janelle has created a series of "positivity talks" on YouTube as a part of her campaign. The videos can be found at YouTube.com/JanelleyAlonzo
