What made you want to join Cross Country?
I wanted to start doing track back when I was younger because I was kind of the quicker person in my class. I knew I was kind of good at it so I wanted to work on it as a sport.
Are there any people who have helped you during this process?
Yeah, Brett, who just graduated. He was the first person that talked to me and he kind of guided me through the start. He gave me a lot of tips once I was starting and the other coaches actually helped me learn how to run [properly].
Do you get nervous while competing?
Yeah all the time, but I always have confidence in myself now that I’m more experienced and I know what I need to do now to do well.
Do you have a certain mindset while competing?
A lot of times I remember what coach tells us like, “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” I just tell myself that I can do it and I really get it into me that I can run with the tough guys and I can win.
How do you feel about the CIF Finals? Are you nervous?
Yeah, I’m nervous because it’ll be last chance to be able to go to state...so it’s a bit of pressure because everyone really expects me to go, but I believe I can go, and I believe I can do it. It’s just really exciting to be able to go and make it to state.
Are you thinking of continuing this sport?
Yeah for sure, I’m thinking of [running in college] and hopefully I’ll be able to try and make it into the pros.
What would you say are your greatest accomplishments?
I’d say it’d be winning league and beating the Laguna guys because they really made a big show of it last year. They were all getting on the stage cheering at each other and the guy that won was like posing and everything. So I decided that time that I was going to beat them for sure.
Is there anything you regret doing during races?
Sometimes it’s when I don’t push enough and I feel like I could’ve done more.
Is there anything you’re proud of during races?
Good kicks. Hills. I’m better at going up. I’m proud of the progression that I’ve made compared to the years before...like being able to run up the hills faster.
Did you feel nervous during the CIF Prelims?
Yeah but looking at the people in the race and the heat overall, it looked like I was pretty much at the top already and going into it I just told myself that I was going to win the reace.
How are you preparing yourself for the CIF Finals?
I’m getting extra sleep, a lot of sleep. I’m stretching, rolling. I look at inspirational videos to get myself pumped up. And visualization. I visualize the course, I’ve done it so many times now I can just go through it in my mind and I just think of how I’m going to run it.
How do you expect yourself to do?
I think I’d be top 5 finishing. I think I’ll be pretty high up.
**UPDATE: Anuare placed 8th at CIF Finals and qualified for State, the first Mustang to do so in 16 years.
