The 31st Annual Woodbridge Invitational at Jim Scott Stadium ranks as one of the largest High School sporting events in the nation. It took place on Friday and Saturday, the 16th and 17th respectively, in the evening. 10,000 runners participated, with some runners waiting up to five hours for their race. During the invitational, you could see runners from all parts of California, from right here in Costa Mesa to runners all the way from Rim of the World in Big Bear.
By the end of the night, CMHS runners had earned another twelve medals as well as twelve personal bests. The Mesa Team Captain and front runner Robert Blackwell says, "To put it simply... that was a night that will be engraved in the memory of every participant because of the hard work and shear will power that was put into it. To say the least, I was very proud of everyone."
Varsity (Top 7) CMHS times were:
Robert Blackwell (Senior): 15:42
Brett Bermudez (Sophomore): 16:31
Matthew Morgan (Senior): 17:25
Chad Webster (Senior): 17:34
Dakota Alford (Junior): 17:38
Harry Do (Senior): 17:41
Tristan Pardon (Sophomore): 17:46
Kristi Adams (Junior): 20:50
Jennifer Daley (Junior): 21:12
Raquel Friedmann (Senior): 21:18
Kenya Avila (Sophomore): 23:15
Jocelyn Guiterrez (Sophomore): 23:49
Serena Ozonur (Freshmen): 23:59
Arisa Joi (Freshmen): 24:04
As Robert said, the effort of Mesa's runners show in the big PR's, or Personal Records, of the team. Brett Bermudez, Jocelyn Guiterrez, Daysi Vazquez , and Judy Ramirez all PR'ed by at least a minute. Notably, Brett Bermudez has improved by nearly two minutes within two weeks.
Coach Moreno couldn't have been more proud when he told us, "The evening race was ripe for PR's as the course was fast and the competition deep. Costa Mesa Cross Country athletes did not disappoint as the team stepped up to the challenge. The team set 12 new PR's with 12 athlete's receiving medals. It was truly a great night of racing!"
