Catching Fire, sequel to The Hunger Games, and based off Suzanne Collin's book series was released last Friday, November 22. The movie has since been a hit among fans of the first series and a box office sensation. In fact, Catching Fire earned more than its predecessor during opening weekend with a whopping $158 million in the U.S.
The plot is nothing surprising to those who read the novel: Katniss Everdeen embarks on a victor's tour after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games along with Peeta Mallark. As she travels through the twelve districts, Katniss sees that the people are unhappy with the Capitol. This spirit of rebellion was initiated by her actions during the games, in which she defiantly coerced the creator to allow two winners. The story also covers the 75th annual Quarter Quell Games, a special type Hunger Games which will change Panem forever. President Snow, unhappy with the echoes of rebellion in the districts, decides to have the winners of the games compete again. He wants the hope in the districts, represented by Katniss, to die. New characters, namely the mysterious Finnick Odair and Plutarch Heavensbee, are brought to life in this breath-taking sequel.
The characters are well developed and the effects are astonishing. Certain moments of the movie even had me on the verge of tears (specifically in the tribute to Rue). The ending, though a bit reminiscent of Twilight, left fans everywhere in eager anticipation of the next installment. If you enjoyed The Hunger Games, Catching Fire will not leave you disappointed.
