Costa Mesa High School’s signature academies are DELTA and ACE. The Delta program offers students interested in the fields of math, science, and engineering the option to explore career technical education (CTE). Students take the rigorous courses needed to set them apart from other students while applying to college. It is perfect for students interested in the science and math fields. ACE, or the Academy of Creative Expression, focuses on the arts. It offers different pathways for students to explore art, while incorporating the arts into social science, math, science, language arts, and world languages.
Estancia’s signature academy is the Engineering and Design Academy. Its Bio-Medical Academy and Animation Academy are coming in the 2016-17 school year. Newport Harbor’s signature academy is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Academy. Corona del Mar’s signature academies are the Academy of Global Studies and the Performing Arts and Multimedia Academy.
Upperclassmen at Costa Mesa High School will not be as affected by this change. Costa Mesa is actually ahead of the other schools with our Delta program because our students have been participating in it since seventh grade. The applications to other school’s academies are limited to incoming ninth graders. Our other academies, such as the EMA Academy and the Business Academy, will not be affected by the Signature Academies either.
Additionally, because Costa Mesa is 7-12, seventh graders can still apply and participate in our academies, and if they maintain the proper requirements, they can continue to be a part of these academies throughout high school. All the participating schools are leaving about a 10% growth for people who are interested in their school from outside of our normal zone. For example, in a 35 student ACE class, three or four spots would need to be reserved for students applying from outside zones.
