Grades were changed incrementally as to not alert the attention of the teachers. Eventually, the students just began to steal the answers to the tests to influence their grades outside of the computer.
Not only were all Corona teachers changing their passwords that day, all the teachers in the school district were urged to do so as well. Not only is security at Corona Del Mar High School going to be increased, but so is the security in all of the district and surrounding districts now that teachers, parents, and administration as they realize this is a harsh reality of the impact of society on our teens, and the lengths they will go to, to “be successful” and get into colleges.
As stated by Cristen Rasmussen, teacher at Costa Mesa High School, “I think that it’s really sad that students would stoop to such a low level and be so dishonest, that they wouldn’t feel like they could earn their grade themselves and be good enough with that and they felt like they needed to cheat in order to get the grades that they wanted, and I feel like any person in a difficult situation still has the choice whether or not they are going to act honestly, so yes the pressure from college is more intense now then it use to be, yes the pressure is there to get good grades for students whose parents push them, but that doesn’t excuse anyone’s bad choices, there are other ways of getting good grades… you don’t have to cheat in order to get a good grade.”
But they also try to see if you have character; if you have a good, strong, moral character that will allow you to thrive at their institution. No moral character? You lie? You cheat? You stick little devices into the computer of the teacher who wrote you the most glowing Common App recommendation in the world? You don’t thrive. And what will be the purpose of attending that school with the 6% acceptance rate if you’re just going to crash and burn?
The weight of the world is placed upon the high school seniors of today. When making decisions that could impact the rest of your life, one can imagine the cracks and breaks and dents that will occur under such pressure. Oh, they will happen. There is absolutely no doubt about that.
But how will they choose to repair them?
